Care Guide for Tape Hair Extensions
Proper care is essential for keeping tape-in hair extensions looking natural, feeling comfortable, and lasting as long as possible (typically 6–8 weeks per installation, with the hair itself reusable for 9-12 months when well maintained).
Protecting the adhesive bonds from oils, heat, and too much tension is key.
Always listen to your stylist’s specific recommendations, as product formulas and individual hair types can vary.

Immediately After Installation (First 24–48 Hours)
- Wait at least 24–48 hours before washing your hair. This allows the medical-grade adhesive to fully set and bond securely.
- Keep hair completely dry — avoid swimming, saunas, heavy sweating, or steam.
- Do not apply any products (including dry shampoo, oils, or sprays) near the roots or tapes.
- Avoid tight styles, high ponytails, or anything that puts pressure or pulls on the bonds.
- Brush gently if needed, supporting the roots with your free hand.
Daily Care & Brushing
- Brush 2–3 times a day (morning, evening, and after activities) using a soft loop brush, extension brush, or wide-tooth comb designed for extensions.
- Always start at the ends and work upward in short sections. Support the tape bonds with your free hand to avoid pulling or stressing them.
- Separate the extensions gently with your fingers before brushing to prevent matting at the roots.
- Never yank or force through knots.
Washing Your Tape Hair Extensions
Wash only 2–3 times per week (or less if your scalp isn’t oily).
Over-washing can weaken the adhesive; under-washing can lead to buildup.
- Fully detangle dry hair before getting it wet.
- Use lukewarm (never hot) water.
- Keep your head upright or tilt it back so water flows downward — avoid flipping your head upside down, which can tangle the extensions.
- Apply a sulphate-free, oil-free, extension-safe shampoo only to the scalp. Gently massage with your fingertips. Do not scrub or rub the tape bonds aggressively.
- Let the shampoo rinse through the lengths naturally. Rinse thoroughly.
- Apply conditioner only from mid-lengths to ends. Never put conditioner, masks, or oils near the tape adhesive — this is the #1 cause of slipping.
- Leave conditioner on for a few minutes, then rinse completely with cooler water.
- Gently squeeze out excess water (do not wring or rub). Use a microfibre towel or soft t-shirt to blot.
Pro tip: Focus shampoo on the scalp and let it cleanse the lengths as it rinses down.

Drying
- Always dry the tape bonds completely and thoroughly. Lingering moisture is a major cause of early lifting.
- Use a blow dryer on low or medium heat directed at the root/tape area first until 100% dry.
- Then air-dry or continue blow-drying the mid-lengths and ends on low heat.
- Never sleep with wet or damp extensions.
- Apply a moisturising product such as argan oil to the midlengths and lengths before any heat styling.
Styling & Heat
- Human hair extensions can be heat styles (curling, straightening, etc.), to prevent the hair from drying out, always use moisturising oil or serum and keep temperatures of heated appliances moderate (ideally under 180–200°C / 350–390°F).
- Keep hot tools away from the actual tape bonds.
- Avoid heavy, oil-based, or silicone-heavy products near the roots.
- Lightweight leave-in conditioners, serums, or oils should be applied to the mid-lengths and ends only.
- Limit tight updos or high ponytails that create upward tension on the tapes. Opt for low styles when possible and rotate them.

Sleeping
- Never sleep with loose, wet, or damp hair.
- Brush thoroughly before bed.
- Secure hair in a loose, low braid, low ponytail, or two low pigtails.
- Sleep on a silk or satin pillowcase (or use a silk bonnet/scarf) to reduce friction, tangling, and breakage.
Exercise, Swimming & Environmental Factors
- After sweating (workouts, hot weather, etc.), rinse or gently cleanse the scalp if needed and fully dry the bond areas.
- For swimming: Wet hair with clean water and apply a leave-in conditioner first as a barrier, wear a swim cap if possible, and wash + fully dry the bonds immediately afterward. Chlorine and salt water can weaken adhesive and dry out the hair.
- Avoid prolonged exposure to saunas, steam rooms, or very humid environments.
Products to Use & Avoid
Reccomended:
- Sulphate-free, oil-free, extension-friendly shampoo and conditioner
- Lightweight, non-oily dry shampoo (apply away from bonds)
- Argan oil on the midlengths and ends of the hair ONLY (apply away from bonds)
- Gentle extension brush
Avoid near the tapes:
- Oils, heavy serums, silicone-heavy products, alcohol-based sprays
- Regular (sulphate) shampoos and conditioners
- Clarifying products

Maintenance Schedule
- Book a professional maintenance appointment every 6–8 weeks. Your stylist will remove the old tape, clean the hair, and reapply with fresh adhesive (moving the extensions up as your natural hair grows).
- Do not attempt DIY removal or re-taping — improper removal can damage both your natural hair and the extensions.
- If you notice any lifting, slipping, excessive tangling, or discomfort earlier than expected, contact your stylist promptly.
Extra Tips for Longevity
- Keep the bond area clean and free of product buildup.
- Treat the extension hair like your natural hair but with extra gentleness at the roots.
- Regular trims of the ends help prevent split ends from travelling up the hair shaft.
- Quality Remy human hair responds best to consistent, gentle care.
With consistent care, tape-in extensions can look beautiful, feel comfortable, and protect your natural hair while adding length and volume.
The biggest keys are:
- Protect the adhesive from oils and moisture
- Brush supportively
- Moisturise the midlengths and ends of the hair regularly
- Dry the bonds thoroughly
- Never skip professional maintenance
- Always follow your stylist’s guidance for the best results tailored to your hair and lifestyle.
