Care Guide for Butterfly Weft Hair Extensions

Butterfly Weft hair extensions feature a unique double-layer or folded construction that opens like butterfly wings.

This design creates a fuller yet flatter, more seamless and lightweight result compared with traditional single wefts.  Many versions include a thin PU (polyurethane) edge or base for added flexibility and invisibility.

Proper care protects the delicate weft edge, attachment points (beads or thread), your natural hair, and the Remy hair strands themselves. With consistent maintenance & care, the hair should last 9–12 months or longer across multiple installations.

Each install needs a move-up every 6–8 weeks.

Always follow any specific instructions from your stylist as hair care and maintenance procedures can vary slightly.

Immediately After Installation (First 48 Hours)

  • Avoid tight, high-tension hairstyles (high ponytails, tight buns, or anything that pulls on the wefts).
  • Brush gently while supporting the weft rows.
  • Keep the root and weft area dry and free from heavy products or oils.
  • Allow the installation to settle comfortably.

Daily Care & Brushing

Daily brushing is essential to prevent matting, especially at the nape and around the weft rows:

  • Brush 2–3 times a day (morning, evening, and after activities) using a soft loop brush, extension brush, or wide-tooth comb.
  • Always start at the ends and work upward in small sections.
  • When brushing near the roots or weft, support the base firmly with your free hand to absorb tension and protect the PU edge or attachments.
  • Gently separate the rows with your fingers before brushing.
  • Pay extra attention to the nape area, where matting is most common.
  • Never yank or force through tangles.

Washing Your Butterfly Weft Hair Extensions

Wash 2–3 times per week (or every 4–7 days) maximum. Extensions do not produce natural oils the way hair growing from the scalp does, so over-washing dries them out.

Step-by-step washing method:

  • Fully detangle dry hair before getting wet.
  • Use lukewarm water only (avoid hot water). Keep your head upright so water flows downward.
  • Apply a sulphate-free, silicone-free, extension-safe shampoo to the scalp. Gently massage with fingertips only — do not scrub, pile hair on top of the head, or rub vigorously around the weft edges.
  • Let the shampoo rinse through the lengths. Rinse thoroughly to prevent buildup inside the weft layers.
  • Apply conditioner or a hydrating mask only from mid-lengths to ends. Keep all conditioners, oils, and masks completely away from the weft base, PU edge, and beads/attachments.
  • Rinse completely with cooler water to help seal the cuticle.
  • Gently squeeze out excess water (never wring or rub). Blot with a microfibre towel or soft t-shirt by pressing, not rubbing.

Drying

  • Always dry the weft rows and root area completely after washing, swimming, or sweating. Leaving the base damp can lead to irritation, matting, or weakening of the PU edge.
  • Blow-dry the roots and weft seam first on low heat until 100% dry.
  • Then air-dry or continue styling the lengths on low-medium heat.
  • Never sleep with wet or damp extensions.
  • Apply moisturising oil to the lengths before any heat styling.

Styling & Heat

  • Butterfly Wefts made from Remy human hair can be heat-styled. Always use a quality moisturising oil.
  • Keep temperatures moderate (ideally under 180°C / 350°F) and maintain a safe distance from the weft base.
  • Avoid clamping hot tools directly onto the weft or beads.
  • Lightweight leave-ins, serums, or oils may be used on mid-lengths to ends only.
  • Rotate styles and limit daily high-tension updos to reduce stress on the attachments.

Styling Hair Extensions

Sleeping

  • Brush thoroughly before bed.
  • Secure hair in a loose, low braid or low ponytail every night. This is one of the best ways to prevent friction matting at the weft roots.
  • Sleep on a silk or satin pillowcase (or use a silk bonnet) to minimise friction and tangling.
  • Never go to bed with wet hair.

Exercise, Swimming & Lifestyle

  • After heavy sweating, rinse the scalp if needed and fully dry the weft rows.
  • For swimming: Wet hair with clean water first, apply a leave-in conditioner as a barrier if desired, braid or secure the hair, and wear a swim cap when possible. Wash and thoroughly dry the roots and wefts immediately afterward. Chlorine and salt water can dry out the hair and stress the base.
  • After rain or high humidity, ensure the weft area is fully dried.
  • Braid hair in windy conditions to reduce tangling.

Products to Use & Avoid

Recommended:

  • Sulphate-free, silicone-free, extension-friendly shampoo and conditioner
  • Lightweight dry shampoo (applied carefully at the roots)
  • Hydrating masks (mid-lengths to ends only, once a week)
  • Soft extension/loop brush
  • Lightweight oils or serums for the midlengths and ends only

Avoid near the weft base, PU edge, and attachments:

  • Oils, heavy conditioners, silicone-heavy products, and alcohol-based formulas (these are a common cause of edge issues or loosening)
  • Regular sulphate shampoos
  • Aggressive scrubbing or clarifying treatments too frequently

Moroccan Oil Hair Care

Professional Maintenance

  • Book a move-up appointment every 6–8 weeks. As your natural hair grows, the wefts need to be repositioned closer to the scalp to prevent tension, visibility, matting, and stress on your natural hair.
  • Do not attempt DIY adjustments, cutting of the weft (unless guided by a professional), or removal. Improper handling can damage the PU edge, attachments, or your natural hair.
  • Contact your stylist promptly if you notice matting, discomfort, lifting edges, or uneven tension.

Extra Tips for Longevity

  • Handle the PU edge gently — avoid oils near the roots and ensure the hair is always thoroughly dried.
  • Support the weft base every time you brush near the roots.
  • Keep ends regularly trimmed to stop split ends travelling upward.
  • Deep condition the lengths weekly for softness and manageability.
  • With excellent care, high-quality Butterfly Weft Human Hair Extensions can remain reusable across several installations.

The keys to success with Butterfly Wefts are gentle supportive brushing, keeping products away from the base, thorough drying of the weft area, protective sleeping styles, and never skipping professional move-ups.

These habits protect both the unique butterfly construction and your natural hair while maximising the life of the extensions.
